  • For preachers an inability of listeners to give sustained attention to sermons is a common problem. As attention lapses, content retention decreases, resulting in diminished influence for the sermon. This project proposes that introduction of tension into a deductive sermon will increase listener content retention. Five sermons were preached with tension removed and five were preached to the same group with tension added. Quizzes were administered to determine content retention. A dependent groups t-test verified the thesis. The project also conducted qualitative analysis of test results yielding additional insights related to elements that increase attentiveness and content retention.
