- Abstract
- This thesis states the need for parish pastors to cross accepted therapeutic boundaries in order to define, establish, and maintain Christian friendships with parishioners. Included are the family systems theories of Bowen and Friedman, McGoldrick and Walters' feminist critiques, Aristotle's definition of friendship, Buber's I-Thou theory of relationships, a survey of presbytery leaders, and interviews with pastors successful and unsuccessful in defining, establishing, and maintaining Christian friendship. The conclusion is that pastors are called upon to risk boundary crossings in order to define, establish, and maintain pastor-parishioner Christian friendship as demonstrated by Christ.
