  • This research study examined the formation and sustainability of spiritual friendships among single adults in the megachurch congregation. using the Social Penetration Theory developed by Altman and Taylor (1973), the research supported the notion that, as spiritual friendships develop, self-disclosure moves from relatively superficial, non-intimate areas to more intimate, personal layers of selves. Ten (10) friendship dyads of the same gender were interviewed utilizing 13 open-ended questions. An additional 215 single adults also participated in a 25-question survey. Findings were consistent with the friendship stages of the Social Penetration Theory with deeper levels of self-disclosure based on common spiritual beliefs.
