  • The Brethren in Christ historically have practiced Christian nonresistance. However, the change from a closed sect to an open church has brought changes in their understanding of a peace commitment. This paper focuses on peace as a model of hermeneutics in the church. The history of the church is investigated to uncover a hermeneutic. To discover the contemporary understanding of peace, a questionnaire is mailed to 278 Brethren in Christ ministers. The returns are compared with the historical research. Results show strong support for a peace commitment with new understandings and applications. Some pastors no longer identify with a peace commitment.
