The subtitle explains the motivation of this dissertation which was born out of a deeply felt concern for a renewal of vital preaching. Through biblical, historical and theological research, the author seeks to identify more clearly the action of the Holy Spirit to empower the words of the preacher and the receptivity of the listener towards the life-change that was clearly the result of the New Testament proclamation. This study has awakened the author, and hopefully the reader also, to a greater awareness of the dynamic Spirit dimension of vital preaching.
