Abstract
  • This project explored the potential of intentional participatory lay learning in identifying important elements of transformative leadership for the Victory Presbyterian Church, a mid-size, traditional, urban, African-American congregation. During a six-month period, twenty-four lay leaders utilized Participatory Action Research by engaging in cycles of planning, action, and reflection. Findings from the project included characteristics of effective leadership, leadership expectations, and the importance of resolute action to achieve initiatives for revitalization. The project suggests that effectiveness of lay participation, continuous collaborative learning, and spiritual discernment, are critical for congregational leadership in today's rapidly changing environment.
