Abstract
  • Increasingly clinicians incorporate Buddhist understandings in healing, and many of these tenets can be extended as well to pastoral care. The author lays a foundation in Buddhism before proceeding to integrate the work of pastoral theologians and such Buddhist-informed clinicians as Jon Kabat-Zinn, Marsha Linehan, and Zindal Segal. The result is a Ministry of Presence enriched by mindfulness, acceptance, and lovingkindness among other Buddhist principles. Moving beyond the clergy-congregant dyad to the larger community, the dissertation offers a template for right relationship and prophetic witness as presented in Buddhism's Four Noble Truths.
