  • The purpose of this study was to discover the factors leading to change or spiritual growth in adult Christians. The writer concluded that attention to biblically-based spiritual disciplines in the context of a grace-oriented local church providing caring, accountable, mentoring relationships was the consistent path to spiritual growth through church history. Qualitative research with focus groups from three large evangelical churches confirmed this. This writer considered: the Reformed approach to progressive sanctification; the place of the Law in sanctification; and the contribution of various movements of spirituality through the history of the church culminating in the current spiritual disciplines movement.
