Abstract
  • After reviewing contemporary efforts to renew the use of the Sacrament of Penance in the Catholic Church, this thesis project presents the theological method of mystagogy as used by the Church Fathers in the fourth century and searches for elements of that method in the Council of Trent and Catechisms which followed. With insights from this review and an exploration of pedagogical methods, a mystagogy of the Sacrament of Penance was designed and shared with a group of adult Catholics. The paper presents six sessions in which the participants used the Bible, literature, and a panel discussion to mystagogically examine guilt, mercy, and ritual-key components of the Sacrament of Penance-in order to participate more fully in the Sacrament.
