  • This dissertation explores the difficulties faced by charismatic founders of independent churches in naming a successor because of (1) no polity or tradition to guide the process and (2) assumptions about what charisma is and how it functions in the self-understanding of the founder and the beliefs of their followers. The dissertation clarifies how to understand charisma and charismatic leadership in a way that helps founders to name a successor and maintain the integrity of their relationship with the followers. A review of leadership studies on charisma, charismatic leadership, and succession planning is the lens for analysis of the research on succession planning for Hillside Chapel and International Truth Center in Atlanta, Georgia. The dissertation concludes with a model and practices for succession planning that addresses specific issues for charismatic leaders who found independent churches.
