  • This project proposes that sexuality bias and gender oppression hamper full development of African American Presbyterian women as persons in church and society. The project explores such bias and oppression and assesses women's responses through analysis of James Baldwin's play, The Amen Corner, and interviews with African American Presbyterian ordained and lay women. The research discloses that women do not adequately understand the nature and ramifications of sexism in African American Presbyterian life. Empowerment to resist ecclesial sexism may demand gender-sensitive pastoral care ministries and fresh perspectives on the essence of personhood, power, and justice fostered by transformed and magnified images of biblical characters, Jesus, and God.
