- This study refutes the binary (male/female) understanding of biblical anthropology. A woefully inadequate, often dualistic, misreading of Scripture, this assumption has long obscured the symbolic structure of Eucharist. This Dissertation/Project reorients Christian anthropology within the triadic paradigm of Hebrew and Christian symbolism. It builds on the 1960's work of social anthropologist Mary Douglas who argued Old Testament Hebrew purity rules and ritual implied a well-defined symbolic system rooted in social organization. Evidence from archaeology, anthropology, and Scripture suggests that biblical symbols are indeed part of a systematic symbolic matrix whose rules 1) safeguard a social order modeled on the cosmic balance of earth (male), seas (female), and sky (symbolic language) and 2) inform our awareness of Trinity.
