  • This project examines a male pastoral psychotherapist's work with young men relative to the lack of clear rites of passage in American society. It draws on both psychodynamic and systems theories because of the combined need for both individual and relational growth. Methods include a literature review, anthropological and cross-cultural analysis, and discussion of case material. It concludes that understanding the structure of traditional rites of passage can help to guide a male pastoral psychotherapist when working with male clients, and that identity as a pastor enhances his effectiveness with them.
