  • Officially a priority the past sixty years, the ecumenical movement lacks a convinced constituency among the Orthodox faithful--indeed, among Christians as a whole. The movement's advocates, the author feels, have separated their activities from the consensus fidelium and have not defined ecumenism in terms of the church's tradition. Taking a traditionalist path of research, the author presents witness from the Bible, Councils, and fathers of the undivided Church for ecumenism as a movement integral to the church's covenant in the world. The author proposes communication of this traditional understanding to the faithful, 'grassroots' involvement, and certain priorities for church unity efforts.
