  • Jewish tradition has much to share regarding pastoral theology and care in the areas of illness and bereavement. This study involved research into classic Jewish texts, findings in modern psychology and Protestant traditions, and the clinical experience of the author. Jewish pastoral theology and care is based on sharing a cognitive empathy with the patient or mourner. This is not restricted to clergy but is incumbent on every Jew. The study also developed specific roles for the rabbi. This material will help rabbis and laity understand their pastoral responsibilities to the ill and bereaved, and serve as reference for non-Jews.
