  • Alcohol addiction impairs the capacity to mourn the death of a loved one, so much so that some family member almost always experiences symptoms of complicated mourning. The relationship of complicated mourning and alcoholism is explored. The 'thick description' of Geertz, the 'method of correlation' of Tillich, and the 'intercultural spirituality' of Lartey are used to examine three case studies; concepts from Bowlby, Rando, Masterson, Hammer and Hammer, and Brown; and theological perspectives from the Bible. Research discloses that persons in families in which there is alcohol dependence or abuse are indeed at risk for complicated mourning.
