Abstract
  • The study addresses the problem of unchurched parents who present their children for baptism. The goals of the study are to demonstrate the magnitude of the problem and describe the different ways the clergy minister to unchurched parents. Fifteen parish clergy in the Archdiocese of Baltimore were interviewed. The history of infant baptism along with current canon law is examined to put the unchurched parent problem in context. Findings include: over fifty percent of parents who present children for baptism are unchurched and parents have little knowledge of current sacramental theology.
