- This project identifies factors promoting growth among older Free Methodist congregations in New York State. Four such congregations, each more than 30 years old, have grown from an average worship attendance of fewer than 80 to an average of more than 125 within a 10-year period. The project devises and administers a Turnaround Church Survey for use in interviewing pastors and lay leaders in these congregations. Twelve factors emerge as significant in the growth of these churches: visionary leadership, quality in music and worship, willingness to change, warm reception of visitors, attendance at growth seminars, removal of obstacles, equipping of laypersons for ministry, prayer, tithing, spiritual renewal, addition of staff, and intentional ministry.
