  • This project tests the hypothesis that small congregations exhibit characteristics of immersed right brain mind-set as identified by James Ashbrook. Forty-four sessions of Presbyterian churches in western Pennsylvania, ranging in size from 47 to 700 members, responded to a questionnaire devised to measure right brain-left brain tendencies. The smaller congregations gave more right brain responses than the larger congregations; results were statistically significant at the .01 level. Other metaphors useful in discerning the personality of a congregation are described and include characteristics of the congregation as a whole, the spirit of the place, sociology, history, and behavior of individuals.
