Abstracto

The author explores the phenomenon of the counselee's projection of religious images on the pastoral counselor and the significance of the projections on the therapeutic process. These images appear to arise from the unconscious as primitive mythological motifs. The author calls their projection the 'ordaining' phenomenon. When it occurs the event raises many issues: what triggers it? What is its scope? What are its implications for healing and growth? What are the symbols and archetypal images that constellate and to what processes do they point? Are they positive or negative? Do they enhance or restrict the counseling process? Finally, how can the pastoral counselor make use of these insights in the peculiar ministry of pastoral counseling? The myths function as neurotic defenses for the counselee. For this reason the task of pastoral counseling is described as a demythologizing.
