  • This thesis explores how congregational development consultants can be advocates for the ministry of the laity in daily life. In the research project nine consultant interventions were developed and then evaluated by clergy and laity. The researcher concludes that consultants can express their ecclesiological position to client congregations as long as this nurtures the consulting relationship. He proposes that congregational support for baptismal ministry can be ethically influenced through personal self-disclosure by the consultant and a mutual exploration of ecclesiology. The thesis acknowledges the tension between servanthood and proclamation in the ministries of clergy, consultants, and lay people.
