  • This dissertation focused on the cause-and-effect relationship which numerous authors have said exists between small groups that experience spiritual renewal and the onset of renewal in the larger congregation. Five small groups participated in a ten-month program of spiritual formation using John Wesley's 'band' model. A questionnaire was administered to the small groups and the rest of the congregation before and after the program. The small groups experienced significannt spiritual renewal but the remainder of the congregation did not. Thus, the potential for church renewal is enhanced if additional members become active in small groups.
