- Most leadership and management theory uses business and military accountability models. Such models are ineffective in a small church setting. Yet, there is little information available regarding the power, authority and leadership in small volunteer organizations. This project uses interviews, observation, surveys and experience to explore the laity-clergy leadership dynamics of small churches. It finds that: pastors are valued as persons before professionals; key leaders sense and articulate group needs and help the group use resources to meet needs; goals are accomplished by attending to the maintenance of relationships. An increased self-awareness, a better understanding of relational needs and a grasp of relational leadership dynamics can make small churches healthier, happier and more productive.
