  • As urban renewal superseded the older strategies of slum clearance as a means of renewing the city, the church, as an urban institution, was drawn into this process. This study examines the role of the churches as an important part of downtown Washington DC experienced the trauma of urban renewal. Initially, the church's response was dominated by institutional concerns of building and maintaining itself. Slowly, patterns of community involvement and mission evolved. As a means of understanding this sense of mission, the biblical concept of diakonia is studied, and servanthood is proposed as an appropriate and adequate biblical and theological definition of the church's participation in the life of the city.
