  • This work analyzes the role of humor as a method of communication that preachers can use to make their sermons more effective. The legitimacy of humor from a theological standpoint is examined and established. Further, the value of humor as a tool in communication is explored and explained. A theological rationale for humor in preaching is provided in this thesis. Humor's use in preaching is validated by its presence in creation, in redemption, in revelation, and in the incarnation. Particular attention is given to the existence of humor in the scriptures, and most notably, to Jesus' frequent use of humor in his teaching ministry. This study deals with understanding the basic essence of humor. The nature of what makes something funny is investigated. Also, the beneficial effects of humor, in life generally, and in communication specifically, are thoroughly considered. This project also offers information about how humor can be used appropriately in preaching. Suggestions on developing a humorous disposition and discovering humorous material are included. In addition, instructions on the delivery of humor are offered. A description of the dangers associated with the use of humor in preaching is also addressed in some detail. Overall this thesis asserts that humor is an aid to effective communication that, when used appropriately by preachers, can enhance the impact and influence of their sermons.
