- When pastors and lay leaders view their congregations from a systems perspective and become educated in the key concepts of family systems theory, their congregations can become spiritually renewed. Five family systems concepts were applied in this project: homeostasis, boundaries, triangles, identified patient and differentiation. The project was based upon a theology of freedom that is found in Jesus Christ. It is God's mission in the power of the Spirit through the church. The world is a system of interactions. Conflict happens and reveals a need for God's mission of freedom in Jesus Christ. The project, a one year experience, included changes in programs, parlor meetings, session meetings, the completion of a Congregational Systems Inventory, a session retreat and a peer evaluation held after the project. The result was that elders became more knowledgeable of how systems concepts could be used to change our church family system. Communication patterns improved, destructive triangles were eliminated, anxiety was reduced and the church became energized, playful, and spiritually renewed.
