  • What happens when we die? In parish ministry, every clergy person eventually faces this critical question from grieving families. Despite the pastoral urgency of this question, little attention has been paid to the types of beliefs about heaven held by mainline church members. The author of this thesis insists that for a church to flourish as a vital practicing congregation (in Diana Butler Bass' terms) it must have a strong pastoral eschatology, that relates the individual story of church members to the larger story of the redemption of humanity told in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
