  • Based on the assumption that some voiced prayers of intercession are more meaningful than others, this project developed and administered an interview instrument to forty-four individuals to ascertain what makes voiced, intercessory prayer meaningful. Questions were posed to discern if the prayer was meaningful and why (or why not) it was deemed so. Responses to these questions are studied in light of relevant theological and pastoral care literature. Entries from a journal written during a time of crisis are reviewed for ways in which prayer might have been voiced to meet spiritual needs. Finally, prayer responses to questions surrounding spiritual crises are offered to illustrate the conclusion drawn from this investigation that there are identifiable factors that contribute to meaningful, voiced intercessory prayer.
