- Based on depth interviews of seven patients at a large, urban, acute care hospital, this study explores the pastoral care experience within the whole patient experience from the onset of health problems to the discharge from hospital. Insight was gained into the way patients viewed their health problem and prepared for entering the hospital for surgery. The impact of surgery, the effect of anesthetic, and complications in the healing process were explored. Patients saw their surgery not just as an isolated event, but as part of their life experience. Most interesting are the ways in which patients compensate for the troubling, frightening, and chaotic aspects of their experience, reminding us that, above all, this is a human experience involving love, care, laughter, sensitivity, hope, being there, trust, calming, sharing the suffering and connecting with what we believe in beyond ourselves.
