Abstracto

The purpose of this practicum/project is to develop a theoretical, theological, and practical method to help stimulate this congregation to engage in an outreach ministry in the community. The practicum examines the issues of school dropout. Additionally, it examines the role of the community and church in their impact on the prevention of the issue of school dropouts. The practicum was conducted over a six-week period of time. A group of ten laypersons was recruited from Porter Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Dallas, Texas. The group met each Saturday during the six-week period to discuss practical and theological positions for meeting needs in the South Dallas community. The main goal was to explore concrete ways the church could work in the community to aid in the school dropout problem. The group decided to offer a tutorial program to address the academic needs of the student. The group also decided to address issues of spiritual formation with the student. Both components, academic and spiritual awareness, proved effective in this ministry.
