The purpose of this project was to identify the role of pastoral visitation in the 21st century. The multi-faceted responsibility of pastoring a local church makes the practice very difficult. A study of the development of pastoral care in scripture and history led the author to define pastoral care as leading people into holy living through their faith in Christ within the context of the local congregation provided a foundation for developing praxis for the responsibility. The mutual ministry of the people provides care that has been the objective of pastoral visitation. This project discovered that pastoral leadership guided by the disciplines of spiritual direction empowers the people and utilizes all facets of the church for the ministry that has been traditionally assigned to the pastor of the church.
