  • This study investigated the use of Soul Strength to combat internal oppression caused by racism in the development of a ministry model called GROUP. GROUP used Gathering, Resources, Opportunities, Understandings, and Participants as key ingredients in eradicating the damaging effects of racism on African American males between the ages of 15 and 19. The research was done at St. Matthew United Methodist Church in Chicago, Illinois. Religious belief systems of African Americans informed the process. The results were a heightened awareness of internal strength that galvanized participants to be resources for systematic change in themselves and their community.
