  • This project was directed toward two concerns: 1) how to sustain church members in active participation, and 2) how to engage the laity in pastoral ministry. Based on the concepts that ministry is for reconciliation, and listening is a vital ministry, the project sought to train lay church members in the art of creative listening. These trained listeners then called on other church members--especially the disaffected--in an attempt to achieve reconciliation. Two methods were used to evaluate the project: 1) statistical reports of the calls, which indicated that only a small percentage of disaffected members were reconciled to the church, and 2) personal interviews of the callers, which indicated that the program had merit apart from its success or lack of it in recovering inactive church members.
