- Abstract
- The project identified patients and referral sources of a pastoral counseling agency, and investigated differences between patients referred by pastors and patients referred by other referral sources. The study employed a retrospective analysis of demographic and diagnostic data on treatment records from 112 patients who received individual treatment at the agency in 1986. Thirty-two percent of referrals were from pastors, most of whom were from mainline Protestant denominations. Marital complaints were cited most often among patients. Chi-Square analyses indicated patients referred by pastors were no different than those from other sources. Implications for pastoral identity of pastoral psychotherapists were discussed.
