  • Pastors who exercise vision and symbolize the best shared values and aspirations of the church are a major cause of congregational vitality. This paper identifies aspects of symbolic and visionary pastoral leadership by examining biblical (Ephesians 4:1-16, Moses, David and Paul), historic (the life and writings of John Calvin and the PC(USA) vows for ordination) and contemporary concepts (including the writings of John Gardner). These aspects form the core of an original survey administered to pastors and elders of large, growing Presbyterian churches, whose responses offer a practical method for ministers to understand and implement vital symbolic and visionary leadership.
