Abstract
  • This project integrates psychoanalytic theories concerning the religious mind with Catholic theological principles. This study provides theories of interpretation and knowing for spiritual directors. The unconscious is variously understood to impede knowledge, to provide the building blocks for all knowledge and to constitute the essential prerequisites for religious knowledge and experience. Models are used to organize diverse theories. Catholic theological structure, defined by the magesterium, is used because of theological conviction and the opinion that religious knowledge requires interface between personal structures with superordinate structures. The study concludes in favor of theoretical pluralism to elucidate religious experience and knowledge.
