Military chaplains are assigned to strategic organizations. Those organizations plan, resource, and prosecute military operations in support of National defense and security interests. However, the Army, Air Force, or Navy chaplaincies currently do not prepare military chaplains to advise strategic military commanders on the implications of religious affairs. The author was managing editor for Joint Publication 1-05 'Religious affairs in joint operations,' November 2009 and followed Department of Defense standards for developing and publishing Joint doctrine. The result was a substantially revised edition of JP 1-05, the first step toward correcting the deficiencies stated above.
