  • In modern Baptist life, the word conversion denotes a single, transforming event experienced in a worship service marked by high emotion. Those growing up in Baptist congregations most often do not undergo this punctiliar experience of conversion but, instead, experience a gradual conversion maturing in faith over years of nurture. This gradual process can be placed within the framework of James Fowler's faith development theory so that conversion may be viewed as a gradual transformation initiated by outside events and interactions with key people resulting in movement from one faith stage to the next.
