- This project explores the historical and contemporary ministry of evangelism in the Black church as a dialectic of unintentionality and intentionality. It understands this tradition of evangelism to be the convergence of two historical traditions. The first is formal structured evangelistic activity of northern antebellum Black churches. The second tradition is informal, spontaneous activity which has its roots in the southern slave plantations of the so-called 'invisible' institutions. The project elucidates the African-influenced structures and methodologies of this natural, unintentional tradition of evangelism to enable the contemporary Black church in particular and the larger church in general to be more intentional in its practice of evangelism.
