Abstracto

The thesis presents a paradigm for understanding the stages of church growth to maturation from the perspective of human personality development. The developmental theories of E Erikson, J Fowler and H Straughn provide the framework for considering the development of an organic corporate entity such as a local congregation. Reflecting on his experience as a church planter and his own maturation struggles, the writer develops the proposed paradigm. Then, utilizing an open-ended narrative interview, the author presents case studies of three additional congregations to explore the applicability of his model. The six stages of church development paradigm offer to church leadership an additional tool for evaluating and facilitating a church's growth to maturity in Christ.
