  • This project examines how and when pastors terminate ministry in their congregations. By comparing relationships between pastors and congregations to marriage, the project uses insights of couples therapy to develop a model of the relationship that lends itself to the process of termination. Family theory defines the central role of the pastor in the termination process. Using grief studies and theories of attachment and separation, the project explores psychodynamics of loss for the pastor. Biblical and theological resources explain separations that offer insight into the ways that clergy might conduct their terminations. A case study using a composite of interviews tells the story of one termination. The project offers a liturgy for termination by adapting a liturgy of installation.
