  • The purpose of the dissertation was to investigate how leaders deal with the adaptive challenge of encouraging commuting families to become active participants in the community life of the church. Dealing with the needs of commuter households, determining ways to enable them to participate meaningfully in the life and ministry of the church, and facilitating the transformation of a commuter church into an outward focused, community-anchored church are adaptive problems. This study revealed the great importance of strategic leadership development, the value of strengthening the nuclear family as a way of building community within the church, and the power of community in retaining congregant members, even at a great distance.
