  • This paper presents the hypothesis that narcissism and loss of spiritual meaning are two of the critical clinical issues of our culture. Psychotherapy and spiritual growth are concerned with changes in consciousness--changes in basic beliefs about self, others, the world and ultimately about God. Narcissistic personalities suffer from spiritual poverty as well as from psychological isolation in a cocoon of self-absorption and internalized deprivation. In this clinically oriented paper, the author demonstrates that the therapeutic process is also a redemptive one, and should enable the client to find a genuine sense of self-worth based on wholeness and to awaken spiritual values that are capable of providing sustaining meaning in life.
