  • Among Vietnam War veterans reporting personal growth since the war, service to others plays a part. The thesis uses literature dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder, narratives about the war and its aftermath, biblical exegetical material on the language of service, theological writings and personal interviews with eight combat veterans of the Vietnam War. Virtually all of the veterans were engaged in service for their own healing. Other learnings include a new understanding of diakonia, an understanding of power that frees it from its association with domination, and an approach to ministry with persons suffering the effects of trauma.
