  • This project was motivated by a desire to preach biblical narratives employing such literary/rhetorical devices as allusion, analogy, chiasmus, climax, metaphor, parallelism, personification, repetition, foreshadowing, and irony. If the biblical writers purposefully used rhetorical devices in their writings, then it seems to be a preacher's obligation to deliver sermons incorporating literary devices. The Book of Esther was the focus of this study, and was analyzed and interpreted from the literary/rhetorical point of view. Surveys of several sermons were conducted to determine the effectiveness of employing literary devices in narrative preaching.
