- This study explored the impact of what is commonly referred to in current literature as a forced exit, involuntary resignation, or termination upon a select group of pastors within the Evangelical Presbyterian Church--but in situations other than moral failure. The study attempted to discover the impact or effects of such an experience--solely from the vantage point or perspective of the pastor. As such this study was intended to be an impact study and the research methodology qualitative in nature. The study found that the personal impact upon pastors themselves included: a sense of being blindsided by what ultimately happened; a sense of personal betrayal at the hands of a trusted elder or key layman in the church; a sense of betrayal of the pastoral office over the way the Presbytery did or did not handle what they viewed as a church discipline issue; and a struggle with forgiveness both toward particular church members as well as God.
