  • The aim of this paper is to develop a theoretical framework that will lay the groundwork of a nursing curriculum concerning spirituality and oncology nursing, and spirituality and the cancer experience. The author argues that in order for nurses to deliver comprehensive, holistic care of persons with cancer, nurse educators must modify their curricula and clinical training programs. She urges educators to include a historical perspective of who nurses have been throughout the history of the Christian church, encourage spiritual self-exploration and training in their students, and reclaim the work of the forerunner of spiritual care in nursing, Florence Nightingale. She examines spiritual needs of patients primarily in the context of case scenarios of those newly diagnosed with head and neck cancers.
