Abstracto

Under the influence of post-exilic Hebrew monotheism, a split in the divine personality occurred and the negative aspects of God were assigned to an oppositional being that would eventually become Satan. The author researched the process involved in the metamorphosis of the biblical Satan between the Old and New Testaments. She concluded that religious syncretism, the popularity of Hellenism, and Jewish apocalyptic literature, helped to distinguish Satan as an independent, supernatural adversary of God. The New Testament Satan acts as an adversary to Jesus. A lesson plan for college-level educators interested in teaching the biblical Satan's story concludes this paper.
