  • In this thesis the author will argue that to be effective communicators of God's word, preachers must preach expository sermons without notes. The author's premise is that expository preaching without notes is the most effective way to communicate God's word in a media culture. Although we live in a visual culture, the author believes that the oral transmission of God's word is still a viable means of communicating the Good News. Whereas the content of our message cannot and must not change, the method with which we communicate the message can and should change. The particular method that will effectively communicate God's word in a media culture is preaching expository sermons without notes. This thesis is comprised of five chapters. In chapter one the author will state the case for expository preachingwithout notes. Chapter two will examine the role of preaching and preachers from a biblical perspective through the use of theological reflection. Chapter three presents a focused literature review on the material currently available on expository preaching without notes. Chapter four includes a syllabus and outlines for teaching a course on expository preaching without notes. In chapter five the author reflects on what he learned from writing this thesis as well as what he learned from teaching the aforementioned preaching course.
