  • If older adults have a sense of being in relationship with God, then they will find a meaningful purpose in life. This relationship transcends all other sources of meaning, many of which will be lost in old age. The heart of the paper is a survey of older adults. Responses to the survey are discussed in light of the theories presented. Psychological theories include the psychosocial stages of Erik Erikson, the constructive developmental approach of Robert Kegan, object relations theory, and a study of faith development using the stages of faith of James Fowler. The conclusion summarizes eight major findings and discusses four implications for pastoral care.
